Bishop Jennifer Visits St. George’s Cathedral, Cape Town

Last week, Bishop Jennifer and her family visited Cape Town, South Africa, as guests of St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town. The cathedral, where the Very Rev. Michael Weeder has been dean since 2011, was a seat of resistance to South Africa’s apartheid regime. During those years, it became known as the People’s Cathedral.

Bishop Jennifer preached at St. George’s on Sunday, saying, “It will soon be 30 years since Nelson Mandela was elected president here and now our worlds—yours and mine—are facing some of the most significant challenges in our nations’ histories. So we need each other. We need to share our stories and histories of working for transformation in the name of Jesus as we seek God’s peace.”

Watch the service on Facebook. Bishop Jennifer’s sermon begins at about minute 32 in the video.

During her visit to St. George’s, Bishop Jennifer wore the Truth and Reconciliation cope, which was designed by Terry Duffy in recognition of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s work in reconciliation and given to St. George’s by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
