CBCP Phase 2 Matching Capital Grant Program Overview

The second phase of the Church Buildings for Collaborative Partnerships (CBCP) program includes a matching capital grant opportunity. Any Episcopal congregation in Indiana may apply for one grant, which must be matched dollar-for-dollar by the congregation. Grant awards will be made based on how well the congregation and its proposed project(s) meet the grant eligibility criteria below, and on grant fund availability.

How and when to apply

  1. Any Indiana Episcopal congregation may apply for one CBCP Phase 2 matching capital grant and must do so online using this online Google form: LINK TO APPLICATION. Answer all application questions fully and upload all supporting documents as directed. If you have any questions about the application form or uploading, contact CBCP Project Director Linda Buskirk at info@cbcpindiana.org or 260-414-1425.
  2. Grant applications will be accepted each quarter of 2025. Deadlines for applying are:
    • March 31, 2025
    • June 30, 2025
    • September 30, 2025
    • December 31, 2025

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Matching capital grants must be for capital investments in the property that would improve or modify space to better align a church’s property (buildings and/or grounds) with its mission. Examples of such capital investments include:
    • “Brick and mortar” projects that increase space availability, improve accessibility, or address damaged, outdated or unsafe parts of a building.
    • Repairs or improvements to the building “envelope,” such as roof systems, exterior walls and structure.
    • Interior finishes.
    • Preservation of historic building features.
    • Mechanical and other building systems (e.g. security systems, electrical, plumbing, HVAC).
    • Property assessment, engineering or architectural review conducted by an engineering or architectural firm.
    • Equipment (such as refrigerators, Wi-Fi, and technology) may be considered if you can clearly demonstrate that these will support a specific new use, ministry or partnership.
  2. Grant applicants must articulate how the proposed project(s) will help their buildings/grounds align with the mission of the congregation and/or the mission of the church property.
  3. There are two grant categories based on the size of the grant request, and both require dollar-for-dollar matches by the church. The amount of funding available for Category 2 is less than is available for Category 1. When available funding has been granted for each category, applications will no longer be accepted.
    • Category 1: Grant requests ranging from $20,000 to $50,000, meaning the estimated cost of the capital project(s) will total at least $40,000.
    • Category 2: Grant requests ranging from $2,500 to $19,999, meaning the estimated cost of the capital project(s) will total at least $5,000.
  4. A church’s matching funds may come from existing church funds (operating, endowments, special building funds), or from capital campaign proceeds raised through donations by members of the congregation and/or community partners and/or other community donors. Other sources for matching funds might be foundation or corporate grants. These sources do not need to be identified in the CBCP capital grant application, but applicants will be asked to describe their intention about how the church will match the CBCP capital grant, AND will be required to complete and upload a Grant Budget spreadsheet in Excel. The spreadsheet can be downloaded from the application, then, when completed, uploaded to the application.
  5. CBCP Phase 2 Grant awards will be disbursed in full soon after the grant is awarded and a grant agreement is signed by the appropriate church representative.
  6. Any parish receiving a grant will be required to provide a project report at the conclusion of the project. Documentation as described below will be required. Therefore, grant recipients must keep all appropriate records to provide this information:
    • A summary of final project costs and expenses, accompanied by documentation such as copies of paid invoices.
    • A summary of all sources of the matching funds by these categories:
      • Existing church funds/accounts.
      • Capital fundraising within the congregation for the project.
      • Grants or other donations from sources outside the congregation.
      • Other matching fund sources, if any.
