Rev. Julia Whitworth Elected Bishop of Diocese of Massachusetts

Dear Ones,

On the threshold of Pentecost this past Saturday, the Diocese of Massachusetts elected the Rev. Julia Whitworth as their 17th Bishop Diocesan. This is such good news for the Church and bittersweet news for those of us in the Diocese of Indianapolis. This is quite a historic election as Mother Julia will be the first female bishop diocesan of the Diocese of Massachusetts which comprises the eastern third of the state. This diocese is notable for having elected the first female bishop in the Anglican Communion, the Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris (suffragan) and the Rt. Rev. Gayle E. Harris the second female bishop in Massachusetts who was consecrated suffragan bishop in 2003.

As you may know, Mother Julia has served the past eight years as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Her leadership at Trinity, St. Richard’s Episcopal School, and in ministries and organizations across the city of Indianapolis has been transformative. In addition to serving on our Executive Council and deputy to General Convention, it is Mother Julia we have to thank for programs such as Trinity Haven and the Faith at the Crossroads house (previously known as Trinity Service Corps). She will leave a deep and lasting impact on our diocese and the broader community.

I imagine there are many questions about what lies ahead for Mother Julia and for Trinity Church. Please be assured that my staff is already working to ensure a faithful and good transition. For now, I bid your prayers for Mother Julia, her husband Ray Neufeld, and their children Liam, Gregory, and Grace. Please hold Trinity Church and the Diocese of Massachusetts in your prayers as well.

Pending consents, we expect the consecration to take place October 19, 2024, in Boston, Massachusetts. When we have more details about ways to participate in attendance and celebrating this historic election, I will be sure to let you know. May the Holy Spirit continue to blow and enliven us all in these exciting days.
Faithfully,
