Archbishop Desmond Tutu, powerful leader in the movement against apartheid in South Africa and prophetic force for nonviolence, died on December 26 at age 90.

Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrrows, who had the privilege of knowing and working with Archbishop Tutu, remembers a Trinity Wall Street conference at which “he had all the participants outside one of the halls at Kanuga dancing as we he proclaimed that God’s love was for all, all, all.”

“After all he’d been through and done for the cause of freedom and equality in South Africa, his joy at proclaiming that message was infectious, inspiring, and unforgettable. On days when America too often feels like it is veering toward an apartheid state, I remember his courage.”
