The Global Mission Commission has launched an urgent fundraising effort on behalf of our companions in the Diocese of Haiti and the Diocese of Brasilia, which have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now through November 20,, the commission will match the first $6,000 donated in support of the diocese’s global relationships. In addition, Bishop Jennifer today announced that the offering at the worship service to be conducted on November 7 during the diocese’s online convention will benefit our partners in Haiti and Brasilia.

“The pandemic has had a tremendous impact on our diocesan partners,” Bishop Jennifer said. “They have had to devote so much money to nutrition, healthcare, housing and other basic needs, that little remains for other programs and activities. They need our support more urgently than ever, and I hope the people of our diocese will be generous.”

The Rev. Jean Michelin St.-Louis, who oversees the Diocese of Indianapolis’ work in Mithon, Haiti and at St. Andres parish there, writes that Mithon’s garden, its principal source of income, was destroyed in August by Hurricane Laura.

“The finances are not ok,” he writes. “We just began the new school year. Usually we buy many supplies and do small reparations before we reopen. Not this year.”

In Brasilia, Bishop Mauricio Andrade has asked the Global Missions Commission to continue its support for Pedregal, the largest of the social agencies in that diocese. Such support will allow the agency to offer assistance in the wake of the pandemic, while maintaining salaries for the three full-time staff members employed at the center.

“We give thanks for the incredible work that we are able to participate in through the financial stewardship of our resources and the work of our diocesan partners,” said the Rev. Jeffrey Bower, chair of the Global Mission Commission. “We pray continued blessings on our work together that our efforts might strengthen our global partnerships in the days ahead.”
