I am delighted to report that, earlier this afternoon, the Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown was elected 11th Bishop of Vermont on the first ballot.
I have known Bishop-elect Shannon for more than a decade, and it has been a joy to be in ministry with her during her time at Christ Church Cathedral; St. John’s, Speedway; and St. Thomas, Franklin. Her pastoral ministry, commitment to social justice, and artistic creativity have been great gifts to our diocese and to Province V of the Episcopal Church, and I rejoice that the Diocese of Vermont will now benefit from her faithful ministry and commitment to the gospel. I take particular note that Vermont, having previously elected the first woman to serve as diocesan bishop in the Episcopal Church, has now elected the first black woman to serve as diocesan bishop in Province I.
Pending consents of the wider church, Shannon will be ordained and consecrated on September 28 in Burlington, Vermont, and I look forward to that day. Until then, please join me in celebration and prayer for Bishop-elect Shannon, her family, and the Diocese of Vermont in their transition.
