Lay Ministries


Each parish member and each congregation has gifts and resources that can make the world more loving and more just. Need help to discern your own or your congregation's unique mission, or to gather the people and the tools to do God's work, or to develop partnerships in your community, or information on how to minister to others as a lay person? Here are resources that can help.


Community of Hope

Our Mission is to create Christian communities of lay volunteer pastoral caregivers united in prayer, shaped by Benedictine spirituality, and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries.

Education for Ministry (EFM)

Education for Ministry (EFM) is an intensive lay ministry education program offered by the Seminary of the South at Sewanee. EFM groups meet in every region of the diocese.

Lay Eucharistic Visitors

Lay Eucharistic Visitors (LEV’s) have a licensed, trained ministry of taking the word of God and the consecrated Holy Communion to those who are unable to be present at worship and Holy Eucharist.

Lay Ministries Grants

Lay Ministries Grants are available to laity for study experiences that will help to enrich the life of of congregations and the diocese.

Lay Readers

Lay Readers read the word of God during congregational worship services. Training is available from the diocese to assist Lay Readers in this ministry.

Stephen Ministries

Stephen Ministers are caring friends who listen, care, pray, support and encourage fellow parishioners and friends of the Cathedral community. Trained with over 50 hours in providing emotional and spiritual care, Stephen Ministers are completely confidential companions to people going through long-term illnesses, job and family transitions, spiritual or personal crises, or who simply need a listening ear.
